For many Americans, April 15th is the most stressful day of the year. The date when federal taxes are due can strike fear into the hearts of the most stoic taxpayers.
Writing that yearly check to Uncle Sam can be quite distressing, especially if you find you owe more than you thought you would. What can be especially troubling is that the stress can stay with you, year in and year out.
But for many people, the stress begins long before the filing deadline. It may occur as early as December when the tax forms first arrive in the mail. Or it may happen when your W-2 form comes across your desk at work.
It may happen when you hear about tax season on television. Even getting your yearly interest statement from your bank might be enough to put you over the edge.
You may know some people who seem completely relaxed when tax time rolls around. It seems that they have everything in order, and they have little to worry about. For such people, tax day seems to be a virtually stress-free experience. You’ll find them whistling through the hallways at work while you’re hunched over your calculator, wondering whether you can pay your tax bill.
You need to realize that you can handle the stress of tax season without going ballistic. However, this means that you must be pro-active when it comes to handling your taxes. A little bit of planning can go a long way to reducing your taxes and your stress level.
To begin with, it could help you immeasurably if you seek the services of a financial planner. He or she can help you to take control of your finances, which can reduce your stress level considerably. Also, the financial planner can help you to employ certain strategies which will enable you to reduce your tax bill.
Next, you have to seriously consider whether it will do you any good to do your taxes yourself. While figuring out your own tax bill can give you a feeling of control, it can also increase your stress level tremendously.

Therefore, you might seriously consider hiring a tax accountant to handle the stress of your taxes. While such a move will not eliminate your stress entirely, it can seriously reduce it.
Keeping folders of all the documents you need for filing your taxes can also lessen your stress. If you keep the folders current throughout the year, you will not be in a mad rush at tax time to find the papers you need to file your return. You might consider color-coding the folders for easy reference.
Also, keep the folders in a central location. While a filing cabinet might be the best solution, you might also consider a hope chest, an end table, or a desk drawer. And be sure to keep all your records for at least three years in case a question arises about your return later on.
Another strategy for reducing your stress is putting an end to procrastination. While it might be tempting to wait until the last minute to file your taxes, it only increases your stress level. If you file your taxes long before the due date, you can rest easy when April 15th rolls around. You might be amazed at how much easier it is to deal with tax season when you’ve done some advanced planning.
If you find yourself facing a large tax bill, chances are you will feel stress, no matter what time you file. Therefore, you might consider opening a savings account specifically earmarked for taxes.
This way, you can save for tax day throughout the year. Another option is to increase your withholding on your weekly paycheck so that you don’t have such a huge bill to pay at the end of the tax year.
There is no reason to become overly stressed over taxes. They are a natural part of American life, the means by which the government is able to function. If you take a few pro-active steps, you can significantly reduce tax-related stress. It may be hard at first to break old habits. However, once you do, you might be amazed at how relaxed you feel when April 15th rolls around.Tweet

Reducing Stress Prevents Hair Loss

Feeling stressed out? It may show up as hair loss or thinning (which might stress you out even further!), but only a qualified hair loss professional can diagnose and guide you to the perfect hair loss prevention solution for you.

Stress can affect your hair the same way it affects other major organs, such as the heart. According to Dr. Howard Levy, assistant professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins, one of the most normal, reversible causes of thinning hair and hair loss for both men and women is common, everyday stress. Physical and mental traumas can cause hair loss and thinning — many times three to six months after a traumatic event has occurred. And noticing that your hair is thinning or falling out can even add to the stress.

If you’re aware of some hair thinning and fall-out, it could be something common and treatable; there are many reasons for these conditions, which can be diagnosed and resolved by your doctor or the problem may simply resolve on its own over time. Try to identify if you have had a traumatic event during the past year, or if your life is just too busy, seek treatment and solutions from a hair loss professional and make some changes. The sooner you seek help, the sooner you can minimize or reverse the hair loss entirely, says Dave Barker, owner and hair replacement specialist of IHRS, International Hair Restoration Systems, in Jacksonville, Fla.

Terri Johnston, owner and hair replacement specialist of The Inspiration Salon in Rockford, Ill., says, “I’ve definitely seen this in my day-to-day clients. One women had her hair fall out all around the front of her hairline because of mental and financial stress, in addition to having a new baby (another reversible reason for hair loss, in this case a hormonal one), but after her life settled down, it grew back again.”

Why me?

Barker explains that some people are genetically predisposed to hair loss and thinning at a certain time in their life, and stress can accelerate the rate at which they lose their hair. Stress can be the initial cause, or it can cause the condition to occur earlier in the life of someone predisposed to pattern balding or thinning. “We tell the difference by looking for specific patterns, something only a trained professional can do,” he says, “so be sure to always consult with your doctor and then further with a hair loss specialist. Since hair loss or thinning is not a life-or-death situation, patients may feel like doctors are not sympathetic. If you notice that’s the case with your doctor, you should always take it a step further and find a qualified, experienced hair loss professional,” Barker adds,” because there is much that can be done about your hair thinning or loss.”

What will it look like?

Hair loss caused by stress will usually show up as a general thinning, but many times it can be more localized, explains Barker. “In fact, many times alopecia areata is attributed to stress as an initial trigger — we still don’t know for sure why it happens — but even when it recurs in a new area, it can be attributed to stress or a traumatic event in your life.”

What should I do?

One thing you should definitely not do, agree both hair loss experts, is to diagnose and treat this problem yourself. Johnston says, “One client came to me after she had extensions put into her thinning hair and it started falling out more! She actually made her situation so much worse because the extra weight of the extensions and the way they were applied caused more stress to her already stressed hair follicles and weakened hair.” Barker adds that as soon as you are concerned about your hair loss, you should see a professional who can explain your hair loss treatment options to you. And there are so many of them: prescription medications, laser hair therapy, wigs, hair restoration processes and transplants, non-surgical hair systems and skin grafting, correcting product regimens and more. Both experts advise being certain that a hair loss specialist or company offers multiple solutions, so they can recommend one that would be best for your particular hair type, budget and hair loss situation — because a proper diagnosis and a proper solution are the keys to a greater chance of success.

Stress is the way the body and the mind react when life changes in any way. Adolescence is a period of many changes, including social, physical, emotional, and academic changes. During this period, youths are more stressed than at any other time of their life.

There are many reasons behind teen stress that include college demands, bodily changes, high expectancies of self, being bullied, peer pressure and career decisions. Other less common causes include learning disabilities, family financial issues, divorced fogeys, difficulty making friends and end of relationships.

Teenagers must handle stress effectively otherwise it might result in to severe health problems. A few common health dangers are despair, nervousness, sleeplessness, poor eating habits and shortage of concentration. In the event of any of these conditions, immediate pro help is necessary. If not checked for in time, these issues could lead to aggression or social withdrawal. It’s been seen, if teenage stress isn’t handled reasonably, it might also result in loss of confidence and suicide, in worst cases!

Thus, it becomes important that stress in adolescence be managed effectively. One of he most significant steps to deal with teenage stress is handling time. if you organize your time properly, you will be in a position to allocate time for numerous activities such as studies, play, tuitions, additional classes and so on. This will help reduce stress.

Another anxiety management measure is to set small goals and divide tasks into more controllable chunks. Focus on issues that are in your control and let go of things you don’t have any control over.

Exercise and eat balanced meals and avoid excessive caffeine. Also do not indulge in alcoholism or drugs.

Many kids feel stressed in certain social situations. Think over and practice feared eventualities, for example practicing public speaking or asking someone out on a date. Express your feelings. You can do this through writing, music, talking with buddies, or with somebody you trust like a teacher or a councilor.

Don’t treat yourself in gloomy thoughts, select an optimistic approach. for an optimistic approach. For instance, avoid using such lines for yourself, “My life is stuck and things are becoming unbearable.” On other hand, you can say, “I know things are not results in place, but every cloud has a silver lining!” Using positive remarks will neutralize your tensions considerably.

Accepting yourself the way you are is one of the key rules to manage stress in adolescence. Most teenagers suffer from an inferiority complicated and become the victims of stress. Getting over this complicated and self acceptance can help you deal with stress.

So, have faith in yourself and you will overcome all the hurdles. In case, you are unable to cope up with stress even after using these common stress managements techniques then opt for professional aid.

Have you seen it around lately? It is something that affects us all that is stress. It is estimated that one of ten people you see at work, at the store, and wherever you go in your daily life is touched by the effects of stress. Defined by Webster’s New Dictionary as, “mental or physical tension”, stress affects us not only physically but also financially.

Consider these facts in regards to the physical effects of stress and anger: a Harvard Medical School study of 1,623 heart attack survivors found that when subjects got angry during emotional conflicts, their risk of subsequent heart attacks was more than double that of those who remained calm.

According to Ezine Articles, “80-90% of all doctors’ visits these days are in part due to stress-related ailments; stress has been linked to anxiety, panic attacks, cancer, high blood pressure, etc. One thing for certain is that stress wrecks havoc on our immune system.”

Consider also the financial effects of stress shown by the comments of Elizabeth Scott, M.S., “Roughly 7 in 10 respondents are “very stressed” about money, This is pretty significant because financial stress is linked to health problems like depression and sleep problems. With the rising cost of gas and food, the mortgage crisis, and the new bank troubles we’re seeing, many Americans are feeling the crunch of financial stress.”

In almost all cases the stress and anger that we feel are often carried with us when we go to work. Is it any wonder then that corporations too are feeling the effects of stress? In fact the researchers at the American Institute of Stress estimate that issues stemming from workplace stress take up at least 20 percent of a company’s payroll, and over $150 billion in U.S. productivity each year.

With such gloomy facts and figures, it is not unrealistic to think that there is no hope for conquering or even coping with stress and anger. Julie Christiansen, author of Stress Less in 27 Days and Anger Solutions says there are indeed viable solutions to this growing problem. Christiansen, an internationally recognized speaker, and expert in anger and stress, brings over 15 years of experience in counseling and public speaking to boardrooms, auditoriums, and conference halls. Julie’s tremendous expertise is in high demand from both radio and television. Her effectiveness and passion has caused others to affectionately dub her the “Oprah for the Office,” and the “Anger Lady.”

Julie’s life-changing book, Stress Less in 27 Days, provides readers with the tools necessary to reduce stress and anger by: improving communication, re-kindling joy and passion in their lives, developing an attitude of gratitude, and quitting bad habits. In addition to her book Julie offers Transform[ED] and Anger Solutions Coaching; leading edge processes that helps participants resolve anger, learn how to leave the past behind once and for all, and shows them how to cope with the pressures and stresses of today.

“My work is about creating transformation,” says Julie. “Everything I write and teach is with that end in mind. Stress Less in 27 Days provides practical tools that help people transform their consuming (or negative) stress into mobilizing (or positive) stress. Our coaching programs and corporate programs have the same aim to help people to produce positive, radical, lasting change for themselves.”

Corporations too can benefit from Julie’s expertise through leading edge programs designed to correct inefficiencies and to promote a healthy, productive workplace. Julie’s unique ability is that of tackling “difficult topics” such as Negativity and Anger in the Workplace and Stress Busters, with humor, tact, and grace. Her Survivor themed “Extreme Team Building” corporate program allows Julie to work with teams to diagnose and correct those stress and anger-inducing barriers that may be preventing them from attaining peak performance within their organizations. Julie’s primary focus is the unique needs of the customer, every program she delivers is custom tailored to fit.

“The answers to anger and stress are simple, yet profound,” says Christiansen. “Creating total transformation is not a question of large, difficult changes; rather it is a culmination of small, subtle shifts like a change in perception, or listening more and talking less.” To find our more about Julie Christiansen call here at 905-329-616 or email her at Julie@angersolution.com

The stress of financial woes is one of the number one reasons people seek debt counselling. Deep debt is high on the list of the most stressful, traumatic situations people will deal with in a lifetime. It can even lead to physical ailments, including depression or problems at home with your marriage.

When you sense things are going downhill fast financially, it’s time to find a solution. Debt counselling services are available to help you dig your way out of bad debt. The professional counsellors out there are skilled at finding solutions that allow you to enjoy your life while paying back your creditors.

Debt Counsellors Can Help

In fact, once you have debt counsellors working for you to procure reasonable terms that you can afford to pay back, life should become that much more enjoyable again. If it all goes as planned, you will no longer have creditors on your back, coming after you night and day to collect what you owe them.

There is nothing more stressful than feeling like you are on the run, when you want to make good on your loans, but can’t afford to. You start to feel like a criminal, when collection agencies call you day and night and you avoid their calls. It is hard to have to avoid the telephone and post because you don’t want to be hounded or see notice after notice. But rather than avoid it all, there is an alternate solution.

Avoid Bankruptcy and Reduce Stress

When you seek counselling services, you can help yourself to avoid the ultimate financial disaster of having to file for bankruptcy. Bankruptcy can have permanent negative consequences for you financially. By negotiating with your creditors and setting an agreed upon payback term, you can strategically work your way out of debt and eventually work toward once again securing a good credit rating.

Debt counsellors are professional and sympathetic toward your cause. Unlike the creditors who can be harsh, cold and totally unsympathetic, the counsellors will treat you with the respect you deserve. Debt counsellors realise that life often has many shifts and changes that can throw you for a financial loop. Some people lose jobs, or suffer from financial setbacks that accrue mountains of bills. These factors can sink someone into debt before they know it.

Working with debt counsellors is a much more desirable and appealing way to handle deep debt than filing bankruptcy, which can permanently impact and change your life. Once you have debt counselling on your side, your stress could cease as you’ll have an actionable plan to get your finances and your life back on a more desirable track!Tweet

Like many in our country club, we’ve enjoyed the recent prosperous years, buying things we never dreamed we could. The problem is my husband’s reaction to the economic recession. Before, he was merely stressed trying to capitalize on the robust business climate, his mind always on being as successful as our friends. We began drifting apart, but now it’s much worse. We rarely make love and he’s become hypercritical of me, treating me like a child, often exploding about nothing. I feel our love evaporating. What can I do?

Assuming no other issues (though there often are), “the problem” has at least three facets requiring immediate attention:

1. Balance. Your current priorities are not serving you well. What’s more important to you and your husband: “buying things” or an intimate, close relationship? “Keeping up with the Jones’s” can burn out a family. Success and hard work are admirable, but modern day idolatry in craving the latest Lexus over domestic tranquility is toxic.

2). Teamwork. A strong, equitable partnership in marriage is essential to present and future success. Facing bad times as a team, as well as enjoying the good, is fundamental. Discuss together what your family’s goals are, including those personal and financial. Create a mutually-devised plan that fairly balances each person’s needs and desires.

3. Stress. Even being “merely stressed” takes an insidious toll. Stress can be a risk factor for early heart disease and immune system suppression. It increases adrenal glands activation and cortisol secretion, decreasing memory and learning skills. Exercise and other stress reduction tools you can learn help protect against it.Tweet

Financial worries can cause a great deal of stress to individuals and families. Especially in today’s economy, concerns about job loss, cutbacks, stock market figures and interest rates can give even the calmest and most relaxed among us a headache. For some however, financial stress can lead to more serious types of ill health and anxiety.

Financial difficulties are always stressful, but when you’re hearing about the state of the economy every day in the news, and the bad news just keeps getting worse it may be time to take action. Financial stress can generate significant amounts of fear and anxiety especially when the media is having a field-day with it. If you want to stop worrying therefore below are a few helpful hints that will hopefully keep you sane through this financial and economic disaster.

1. News Fast

Ok, so it’s important to keep up to date with the goings on in the world, but when every day breeds fresh disasters it can be more useful to take a step back and just shut it out for a while. Taking a break from watching, listening to, or reading the news is scary for a lot of people because they can tend to feel out of touch. It might even be embarrassing if you are used to discussing the latest disasters over the water cooler with co-workers. However, researchers know that stress can be very harmful for our mental and emotional well-being and the news by far one of the worst anxiety producers around.

Taking a couple of weeks off from the bad news will not kill you and in fact in will probably help heal your body and mind. Too much bad financial news can make you feel like your own world is about to collapse and the mind cannot often decipher what’s real from what’s simply worry and anxiety about the future. So go ahead and just turn it off.

2. Get a Grip

Sometimes our fears and anxieties over money can cause us to ignore issues we need to deal with. If you’re having trouble paying your bills, or find that you are getting further and further into debt, but are avoiding dealing with it, stop right now and just be brave. There are tools out there that can help you consolidate your debt, or do whatever needs to be done to get you back into the driver’s seat. But, if you don’t have a clue about where you stand, you won’t be able to make the necessary changes to get yourself back on track.

3. Get help

After you’ve got a firm grip on your financial situation, if you feel that you can’t manage it yourself seek out some assistance. Your financial institution or a debt counsellor might be good places to start. Debt counsellors can help you feel you’ve gotten back into control of your situation. They are there to help you manage what might seem unmanageable.

Getting sound financial advice is the right way to go and can relieve much of that anxiety and worry. If you don’t know where you stand your mind can wander off into a variety of disastrous possibilities. However, if you have someone who can help you move forward than you can put your mind at ease. These people can help you work out a strategy that you can live with to move forward.

4. Cut Back

Ok so we’re always hearing about cut backs in the job market, but perhaps its time to make some of your own. Living beyond your means and getting into debt causes significant amounts of stress. Financial stress is in fact one of the main causes of marital discord. Making some simple changes to your spending habits will help you feel more in control and will prevent some of the disharmony that comes from these kinds of worries.

Begin by making some simple changes such as cutting back on those morning lattes by making your coffee at home, or bringing a lunch to work instead of eating out everyday. If you bring a car to work, try to make arrangements to take public transit, bike or walk to work instead to save on parking and gas fees. These simple changes can make a big difference to the bottom line even after only a month.

5. Make a Plan

Making a strategy for your money is a great way to relieve some of the anxiety surrounding it. Fears of the unknown and of those accidents that might arise can keep you awake at night. If you have some extra money each month than consider putting it away in an emergency fund. This can go a long way to easing your mind. And, if heaven’s forbid something should come up, then you won’t have to stress out so much worrying about how you’re going to cover the extra costs. Planning for a rainy day is going to save you a lot of emotional turmoil later on when inevitable or unforeseen expenses come up.

For those who might not be able to put aside money each month, you can still plan to start paying down debt or at least stop incurring it once you’ve gotten an idea of what you make and what you need to live. After making the small adjustments to your spending you should be able to live within your means and hopefully even have a little extra to pay down debt or loans. Whatever the case, making a budget and sticking to it will make you feel much better in the long run.

Small sacrifices here and there are actually themselves small prices to pay for peace of mind. As financial stress breeds worry, discord and family infighting, taking charge of your situation can go a long way to relieving it. Although the economy may seem to be falling apart at the seams, you can still work towards keeping your own finances in line.

Most importantly, try to think about what’s of most value to you and your family. You may not actually need that new car, that new expensive gadget, or even that extra five dollar cup of joe. These things can all be sacrificed without sacrificing what’s truly important: your own peace of mind, happiness and security.Tweet

As many readers know, I serve on my church’s counseling team. When our pastor recently announced in church that his wife was filing in for divorce, everyone was shocked. Divorce among pastors is rare, particularly because they are often so well-schooled in human relationships and often counsel couples to avoid divorce. He informed us that she gave no reasons—so it was open for us to start making all sorts of wild guesses about what might have happened.

Divorces can happen for many reasons. Despite all sorts of ideas you may have, two things are for sure: 1. Most cases of divorce have a financial cause, and in this case, the financial crisis or the credit crunch and the stress it placed on their marriage may have been the root cause and he may not realize it. 2. The pastor needed help—and he may deny this at first, we thought—but we were all wrong. He was the first one to seek our counseling department’s help and so we had a mammoth task in front of us: counseling the counselor. So this is why we came here to seek your suggestions.

This is part of what the respectable man of God shared with us . . .

He informed us that despite counseling uncountable couples, he found his own case challenging. He had no idea how and why on earth could this one happen to him. But he was quick not to blame God and instead he quickly prayed in front of us like this:

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change;

Courage to change the things I can;

And the wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;

Enjoying one moment at a time;

Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;

Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is,

not as I would have it;

Trusting that He will make all things right

if I surrender to His Will;

That I may be reasonably happy in this life

and supremely happy with him

Forever in the next.

Amen

So we thought this was a good start because the man of God was on the right path—he wasn’t looking for someone to blame, he accepted his situation as out of his control and was looking for the strength to make it through the stressful process. This is what we always advise our clients to do when they reach a point of helplessness. We gave him a plus.

The pastor went on to reveal that he no longer slept well; he had neck pains and had lost his appetite. It was more disturbing when he told us that he no longer wanted to be among the congregation—we felt something in our spines. At this point we all realized something had to be done immediately; so when he went on to say that at times he experiences moments of sadness without knowing the cause, we found our starting point.

Whenever a person is faced with a personal crisis, such as divorce, we advise them through a process that includes the following steps. This is precisely what we suggested for the pastor.

1. Determine the REAL Problem

We advised the pastor to engage in intellectualization to recognize what his real issues are. Intellectualization is a process that allows people to avoid their feelings of loss and depression by focusing on the facts. This also helps reveal the true problem of a crisis situation. Our pastor may not make any progress if he cannot immediately work out what his main problems.

2. Quantify the Effects of the Problem

The next step is to get a realistic understanding of how much the problem is affecting your life. For the pastor, his divorce made him lose interest in the profession he always loved and made him uncomfortable in his congregation. One sure way to do this is to score his current life changes and crisis on the Social Life Readjustment Scale. This tool can help measure stress and help quantify the problem.

3. Repress Unproductive Feelings

Then the pastor needed to practice repression to overcome his fears of blame and shame especially towards his family, the congregation, and the public. Letting go of these unproductive feelings can help you move forward on a positive path.

4. Plan for the Future

And last but not least, the pastor needed to go into regression so that he could start a new life. We asked him to craft short-term and long-term goals so he could feel empowered with solutions and have something to look forward to.

All these practical and proven psychology strategies are described in my day-by-day stress management book, 7 Proven Steps: How to Defeat Stress without Going through the Embarrassment of Counseling, which is available on amazon.com and other major bookstores. I offered the pastor a free clean copy. I also referred him to the resources found at www.conciseinteractiveseries.com

Of course, in times of stress, diet and exercise need modification—the pastor understood this too. Being a medical doctor, this was my contribution. The others on my team then jumped in, depending on their expertise, with financial management strategies, legal advice, etc.—I mean that’s the good thing with church counseling department teams. Collectively, we were able to put our pastor on the path to recovery!

Joe Theu, M.D., is the author of the book 7 Proven Steps: How to Defeat Stress without Going through the Embarrassment of Counseling which describes these strategies well. The book is available on amazon.com and other major bookstores.
