7 Simple Ways to Reduce Economic Anxiety
7 Simple Ways to Reduce Economic Anxiety
The current economic nosedive the world is facing today leaves not only Wall Street disgruntled and worried. People from all walks of life also take part in the experience of fear, terror and doom brought on by this financial uncertainty.
Blue- and white-collared employees, even top company executives, lose sleep over these recent turn of events. These people, if not already diagnosed, are hopelessly going mad with their stress levels and angry sentiments soaring high off the charts. Bread winners or sole providers find themselves walking around like some ticking time bomb with the threat of lay-offs, unemployment, and bankruptcy lurking in the corner.
With this reality ever so present in the air, many of us struggling to survive this recession are eagerly finding ways to reduce our family’s outgoings, thus afford the necessities of life. The following are simple ways to help cope with the economic anxiety, with the hope of relieving some of the worries concerning money.
1. Be informed.
Knowledge, as they say, is power. Hence to be powerful, we need to be well-informed with the goings in and out of the market and other related economic issues. Reading newspapers, watching news reports or listening to the radio are perfect examples on how to keep ourselves abreast with the global economy’s situation. When we know something is going to happen, we are in a way already prepared for this crisis.
2. Never keep up with the neighbors.
In this consumer age, it is always very tempting for us to spend beyond our means. When we see our friends, neighbors or co-workers in a custom-made expensive suit or new flashy BMW, we often fell pressured to be “in” or to keep up with the luxuries our group enjoys. Even if we are short on cash or our wealth closes in to zero, we notoriously spend rationalizing that “we were just trying to cheer ourselves up.”
But hey! If we want to be a bit financially secured, we must change our attitude when it comes to our money. If our current habits are leading us into the poor house, it is now the time to give up our expensive habits and change our attitude towards money so that our financial position will improve.
3. Budgeting. Do it now!
We could probably think of many other things we would rather do than sit and write down our budget plans. Combing through files after files of old receipts, bank slips and bills can be so wearing. But doing this budgeting is a very wise plan to relieve some of the economic stress. This step helps us gain control of our finances. Knowing where our money is supposed to go and where it obviously was spent avoids letting our money control us.
4. Commit to saving up.
With the prices of commodities rising, it seems impossible to save a few dollars from our already meager wage. But try to save what you can. A small portion of what you earn should be put aside or deposited in a bank to earn interest. The growth may be small but, if you save up regularly, this will insure your financial success and security.
5. Exercise at the park.
To help our bodies handle stress better, we must never forget to take our regular runs and walks. Exercising is essential to help maintain our body’s physiological and psychological functioning at an excellent shape. We do not have to spend hundreds of dollars in expensive equipment or exclusive gym clubs though just to get toned. We can make use of parks and walk paths. They are free for everybody’s use. In addition to that, exercising outdoors is a great way to help to connect with nature.
6. Home-cooked meal.
Everybody has to eat. Without proper nourishment, coping with anxiety brought on by the recession will be more difficult. And since food accounts for at most 10% of our expenses, we should try to cut back if we still can. We can do this by eating at home rather than in a restaurant or fast food. Eating at home is always cheaper since you do not have to pay for the venue and for the server’s tip. Taking a packed lunch to school or to the office is another way to save on money.
7. Be positive.
The economy is really bad right now. Everybody feels the difficulty. Anxiety for the future and the family’s state will be always in every member’s thoughts. But you should never let these feelings of fear eat you up. Stay positive about the future. We, humans, have always been adaptive; thus, we will survive this economic crisis.
To overcome this financial difficulty, we just have to be patient and committed to reducing our expenses and increasing our savings. Practicing these simple tips will help reduce some of the economic anxiety we are experiencing. Though fear may freeze us from doing something to better our situation, we have to remember that fear can also be a potent force to push us into action. So choose well. Be fearful or be powerful.
